Impact
In 40 years (1982-2022), HFH Kenya has enabled low income families in 250 communities to access decent housing. Current Locations: Homa Bay, Laikipia, Machakos, Tana River, Kisumu and Makueni.
Our History
Evolution of our work in Kenya
Affiliate Model
1982 – 2007
The model consisted of small ‘Habitat’ groups or affiliates through which the organization would coordinate all aspects home construction in a region.
Implemented in:
- Runyenjes Embu County,
- Maua in Meru County,
- Machakos and
- Kisii Counties
Retail Lending
2008 – 2016
This was a Housing Microfinance (HMF) programme targeting low-income households with Housing Micro-loans to undertake incremental housing or home improvement.
It was done through a modified village bank model as a primary method of operation involving 15 to 30 members living in the same neighbourhood, organized into Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and in need of improved housing.

- Embu,
- Kisii,
- Naivasha in Nakuru,
- Machakos,
- Eldama Ravine in Baringo,
- Bungoma, and
- Bomet.
Community Support and Development
2016 – 2020
It involved supporting communities through house construction, livelihood training and water and energy infrastructures, advocating for security of tenure and access to land and volunteer mobilization and engagement to build affordable/low cost houses and promote home ownership for vulnerable groups.
Implemented in:
- Laikipia and
- Homa Bay Counties.
Settlement Based Practice
2020 and Beyond
HFH Kenya is evolving from direct provision of homes to families with access to land and lending to providing support and capacity building to community level structures as a catalyst for transformation.
HFH Kenya undertakes to provide housing construction and training, infrastructures, capacity building, advocating for increased access to land tenure security, and reducing risk and respond to disasters.
Implemented within selected settlements in 6 Counties:
- Homa Bay,
- Tana River,
- Makueni,
- Laikipia,
- Kisumu and
- Machakos.
