Building Homes, Communities And Hope

Habitat for Humanity Kenya (HFH Kenya) champions access to decent and affordable housing for low income households in Kenya by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. We partner with local and global volunteers under the Global Village Programme to provide unique opportunities for all to support vulnerable families with housing as a means of giving back to poor communities.

How it Works

Habitat for Humanity Kenya provides live construction sites through which volunteers can participate in a house construction. Volunteers take short term trips of up to one-week which allows them to work together with local volunteers to build homes for poor people. Our experienced fundis/masons make use of the large number of unskilled tasks to allow volunteers to take part in a day building together. Opportunities to host such groups are carefully planned into our building programme to ensure there is sufficient work for all volunteers. Tasks are physically challenging but carried out in a safe environment with appropriate supervision. In our experience, a ‘team’ needs to comprise 10 to 15 people per day in order for each member to experience a meaningful, memorable day that is also enjoyable.

Our volunteers get to experience the local culture, explore the country and connect at a personal level as a platform for creating long lasting friendships. In the past 3 years, volunteers have participated in builds in Laikipia and Homabay. The support of both international and local volunteers have enabled them to reclaim their dignity and enjoy better shelter.
