Basic Services: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
We advance health outcomes, economic opportunities and gender equality through integrated housing and WASH solutions
Access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene is the foundation of a healthy home. Habitat for Humanity Kenya (HFHK) believes no home is complete without them, which is why WASH is a core component of our housing quality standards. Through our Basic Services programme, we work alongside communities, schools, and local institutions to close the WASH coverage gap, particularly in rural and peri-urban settlements where families remain most exposed to waterborne disease and climate-related shocks.
Our approach
We take a settlement-based approach, ensuring that every home we support is backed by the infrastructure it needs to be safe, healthy, and sustainable, both today and as the climate changes.
Our work spans:
- Water Supply: building and rehabilitating climate-resilient water systems, including solar-powered boreholes, storage facilities, and reticulation networks, alongside innovations like automated water dispensing points.
- Sanitation: installing inclusive, eco-friendly sanitation facilities tailored to local conditions and built to withstand climate stress.
- Hygiene Promotion: running community- and school-based programmes that shift hygiene practices for lasting impact.
Institutional Strengthening: building the capacity of communities and county governments to manage and sustain WASH infrastructure long after construction ends.
Over the past five years, we have reached more than 101,531 individuals across our project focus counties with access to safe water at both household and community levels, significantly improving health outcomes, strengthening livelihoods, and enhancing community resilience to social, economic, and environmental challenges. Our experience has shown that lasting impact comes not from infrastructure alone, but from working alongside communities to design locally led solutions that remain sustainable long after project completion.
