Since 1982, Habitat for Humanity Kenya has worked alongside families and communities to access safe, affordable housing and improve their living conditions.
We collaborate with governments, community-based organizations, other nonprofits and the private sector to address the systemic barriers preventing families in Kenya from accessing adequate, resilient shelter.
Our work spans financial inclusion, housing market systems development, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), disaster risk reduction and response, and energy efficiency — an integrated approach that has helped more than 3 million people access decent housing and basic services for improved well being.

The housing need in Kenya
This is not just a crumbling mud wall. It is someone’s home. Every day, a family wakes up here, hoping the thatch above them holds through another rainy season. This is the lived reality for millions of rural communities in Kenya, a reality we cannot afford to ignore.
Kenya faces an annual housing deficit of over 2 million units, yet only 50,000 are built each year. The crisis is national in scale, but its weight falls hardest on rural and peri-urban communities, where low-income families live in substandard housing that offer little protection from rain, cold, and heat. Tackling this crisis requires sustained investment, inclusive policies and community-driven action — so more families can live in safety and dignity.
