Everyone deserves a safe place to call home.
At Habitat for Humanity Kenya, we believe that decent housing is the foundation for healthy families, resilient communities, and thriving livelihoods. Yet many low-income families in rural and peri-urban communities continue to live in unsafe, overcrowded, and poorly constructed homes due to high construction costs, limited access to quality building materials, inadequate technical skills, and weak housing systems. For Habitat for Humanity Kenya (HFHK), habitability is the foundation of everything we do: it means a home that is physically safe, structurally sound, spacious enough for a family to thrive, well-ventilated, and protected from environmental hazards.

Our Approach

We take a settlement-based approach, ensuring that every home we support is backed by the infrastructure it needs to be safe, healthy, and sustainable, both today and as the climate changes.

We go beyond building houses. We strengthen the entire housing ecosystem by working with communities, government, the private sector, financial institutions, and technical training institutions to expand access to affordable, safe, and climate-resilient housing solutions.

Our approach combines housing construction and home improvements with innovative building technologies, skills development, stronger supply chains, and community-led solutions to ensure lasting impact.

We focus our efforts on those who need it most — low-income households, vulnerable families, women-led households, and youth living in underserved peri-urban and rural settlements.

By improving housing conditions and strengthening local housing systems, we enable families to live in safer, healthier, and more resilient homes while creating stronger communities and expanding opportunities for future generations.

Our work spans

Housing Construction and Home Improvements.

We support the construction of new homes, repair and upgrading of existing houses, and incremental home improvements that enable families to build safer and more resilient homes over time. Our teams carry out habitability assessments, retrofit unsafe structures, and introduce affordable, appropriate building technologies suited to each community.

Innovative and Climate-Resilient.

Building Solutions: We use innovative, climate-resilient construction technologies — including Interlocking Stabilised Soil Blocks (ISSB), Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF), and earth-enabled building methods that improve housing quality while reducing costs and raising standards for safety, sustainability, and resilience.

Supporting incremental home improvement.

Not every family can rebuild all at once. We help households build the capacity to improve their homes step by step over time, extending access to decent housing well beyond the life of a single project.

Growing local skills and supply chains.

We train artisans to apply innovative building techniques and strengthen local supply chains, making quality, affordable materials easier to access.

Healthy Homes Campaigns.

Through our Let's Open the Door Campaign, we are improving the health and dignity of vulnerable families by replacing earthen floors in 10,000 homes over five years and supporting the construction of 200 climate-resilient Eco-Manyattas in partnership with Kajiado County.

Building partnerships that scale impact.

We work alongside government agencies, private sector actors, training institutions, and community structures to champion scalable innovations in low-cost construction and supply chains — strengthening the housing ecosystem.
